AppleCare+ prices just went up: what you need to know

Apple has made a significant change to its AppleCare+ program for iPhones, eliminating the one-time payment option. Effective immediately, AppleCare+ can only be purchased through monthly or annual subscriptions. The upfront payment option is now only available when buying an iPhone through Apple’s online store.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is also prioritizing the more expensive Theft & Loss plans, directing users toward recurring payments.

Price Increases and Subscription Costs

AppleCare+ subscription prices are increasing in the U.S. by $0.50 per month, amounting to an extra $6 per year for both standard and Theft & Loss plans.

  • iPhone 16 Pro Monthly Plan: $13.99/month
  • Annual Plan: Slightly discounted compared to monthly
  • Previous One-Time Payment: $269 for two years (roughly $11.20/month)

Coverage Details

AppleCare+ provides extended technical support for two years, covering software issues and battery replacements if capacity drops below 80%. The Theft & Loss plan costs more but includes protection against lost or stolen devices.

Why the Change?

AppleCare agents have been instructed to inform customers that the shift to subscription-only payments is intended to reduce upfront costs and prevent coverage gaps. However, with subscription-based services becoming the norm, this update also ensures a steady revenue stream for Apple.

For now, purchase options for other Apple products remain unchanged.
